Former Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Monarh has entreated President Akufo-Addo to subject the controversial E-levy to a referendum to know the views of Ghanaians.
According to Mr Monarh, a referendum will enable government to know whether Ghanaians are in support of the levy or not.
“Given the kind of division we have probably the president should made this policy referendum policy and let us see what the president think it is popular or it is not popular.[ads2]
“If the president thinks that this e-levy is popular; he should subject it to a referendum and see what will happen. Is that the way to go? ” He said on the Sunrise show with Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Tuesday February 8.
Ghanaians have expressed their displeasure about the levy despite the assurances and the fact that all transactions adding up to ¢100 or less per day (which is approximately ¢3000 per month) will be exempted.[ads3]
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta when presenting the 2022 Budget Statement in 2021 explained that the levy will cover electronic transactions, including mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances and the 1.75% to be charged will be borne by the sender except inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient.
He further stated that the levy, which is supposed to take effect next year January after Parliament approves the budget will be used to support entrepreneurship, and ensure youth employment.
But it seems most Ghanaians are not in support of the levy.[ads5]
