The Disability Support and Services Unit of Takoradi Technical University have secured educational scholarship for a total of twenty-one students with disability for the 2021/2022 academic year.
This takes to forty-five, the number of students with disability at the University who are on different educational scholarships at the University. This was made known by the head of Disability Support and Services Unit, Mr. Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi.
The scholarships were secured from GNPC Foundation, Social Welfare, Mastercard Educational Support and the Students Representative Council of the University.
Mr. Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi revealed that the efforts towards securing educational support for students with disability is part of the vision of the Disability Unit. “The University has a vision of championing inclusive education at the tertiary level, and the aspect of funding students with disability is concomitant to that long term objective”, he observed.
“Having realized that many of these students, especially the deaf, come from very impoverished homes and communities, where there is little or no financial support and care for their academic and personal needs at the University, it is imperative on the Disability Unit to take steps to reduce those barriers which hinder the achievement of their educational and career goals”. Mr. Oti-Asirifi said.

He revealed that the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Professor John Frank Eshun has tasked the Unit to ensure that there is adequate support for all students with disability at the University.
On this part, Professor John Frank Eshun said “if the University did not step in to deal with the many impediments on the way of persons with disabilities, the consequences would be enormous and disastrous, including denial of their access to university education”.
I am happy for the efforts made so far, the efforts and successes at this stage, but we need to do more, in order to give more opportunities to these special ones”, he added.
Currently, Takoradi Technical University has sixty-four students with recognized disability who are spread across nine different departments..
