The Seventh Day Adventist appeals to the President Akufo Addo to reverse its decision to vote in the December 7 election as the church maintains its position.
In a statement, the Church stated that, while voting is a civic responsibility for all Ghanaians, the fact that December 7 falls on a Saturday clashes with its religious duties.
The Church urges the EC and other stakeholders to reconsider changing the election schedule, claiming that voting on Saturday is incompatible with their religious views.
“The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ghana recognises the civic responsibility of its members to participate in the democratic process, including exercising their right to vote. However, we wish to reiterate our longstanding conviction that voting on Saturday, the Sabbath of the Lord, is not in alignment with our religious beliefs.”
While we respect the diversity of opinions within our membership, this statement, issued by the Southern Ghana Union Conference and Northern Ghana Union Conference is the Church in Ghana’s official position on Sabbath observance and voting on Saturday, December 7, 2024.” the SDA’s statement reads.
Meanwhile, the Minister for food and agriculture has called on the Electoral Commission to allow members of the SDA to vote under the guidance of security personnels. He reiterated that people should not be disenfranchised because of their faith.
