The Ghana Revenue Authority announced in July the implementation of the law to levy vehicles with high engine capacities with effect from Wednesday, 1st August 2018. Under the new tax regime, vehicles with engine capacity of 2950 Cubic Centimeters and more are required to pay respective levies, ranging from GH1,000 to GH 2,000.
The Sekondi Takoradi Trucks Union yesterday after a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday 18 September, 2018, petitioned the Regional Minister to get government rescind the decision to include their vehicles from the tax regime.
According to the general Secretary of the Union, Emmanuel Jackson Mensah, their vehicles are not luxurious.
“We understand that government policies of imposing high tariffs on V6 and V8 vehicles and those cars with white number plates are termed as luxurious cars. We have learnt with great concerns that cargo trucks, tippers with white number plates have been included. We are by this, asking, are our cargo-tipper trucks luxury cars? If not then please, we are petitioning your office to direct the DVLA and other agents not to take those high tarrif on our commercial vehicles” he charged.
He laments, owners of tipper, tankers and other huge trucks are being levied at a rate higher than the previous GH170 they paid to the DVLA.
They have by their petitioned given government a 30 day ultimatum to respond to their demand lest they would advise themselves.
