United States President Donald Trump has confirmed that his administration’s upcoming reciprocal tariffs will apply to “all countries,” dismissing earlier speculation that only select economies with significant trade imbalances would be affected.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump stated that the long-awaited tariff announcement, scheduled for April 2, would begin with all trading partners. “You’d start with all countries,” Trump said. “Essentially, all of the countries that we’re talking about.”
Despite Trump’s recent assurance that the tariffs would be “very lenient” and “surprising,” the lack of clarity surrounding the new trade measures has led to unease in global markets. His administration has pledged to impose duties equal to the tariffs and trade barriers that other countries apply to U.S. exports, although specific details remain unclear.
Trump’s shifting stance on tariffs has left investors uncertain about the permanence of the measures. However, Trump suggested that deals could still be made to avoid the tariffs after the April 2 rollout. The tariffs will also change international trade.
