President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for China-based tech company ByteDance to sell the U.S. operations of TikTok, delaying the potential ban of the popular social media platform. The announcement, made Friday via his Truth Social account, marks the second time the administration has granted ByteDance additional time to finalize a deal.
According to Trump, the extension gives TikTok an extra 75 days of operation in the U.S., moving the deadline to mid-June. He explained that more time is needed to ensure all necessary approvals for the deal are secured.
“The TikTok deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed,” Trump said in his post. “We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!).”
ByteDance confirmed to CNBC that discussions with the U.S. government are ongoing and emphasized that any final agreement must also comply with Chinese regulations. “An agreement has not been executed,” a ByteDance spokesperson stated. “There are key matters to be resolved.”
Before this extension, ByteDance was facing an April 5 deadline to complete a “qualified divestiture” of TikTok’s U.S. assets, a requirement under a national security law signed by former President Joe Biden in April 2024.
This latest development follows Trump’s Wednesday signing of a sweeping “reciprocal tariff” policy, which raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 54% a combination of a newly imposed 34% tariff and an existing 20% rate.
President Trump has previously hinted that a reduction in tariffs could be used as leverage to facilitate a deal for TikTok. He also signaled the possibility of granting additional extensions if a final agreement remains unresolved.
Vice President JD Vance recently expressed optimism about the outcome, stating in an interview with NBC News that a deal addressing national security concerns and establishing a U.S.-controlled version of TikTok could be reached.
