President Akufo-Addo has said the University of Developmental Studies (UDS) would be named after former President Jerry John Rawlings.
President Rawlings when he was alive refused to be named after the University which he personal helped established during his era as the leader of the West African country.[ads2]
But reading his tribute during the burial service of Mr. Rawlings, President Akufo-Addo insisted that the University will be named after the late Rawlings despite his reservations.
“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies (UDS), Tamale which he personally helped establish, named after him.[ads3]
“Two days after his passing, at the 21st Congregation of UDS I expressed my strongest convictions that in spite of his reservations, such an honour should be accorded him,” [ads4]
“I am glad that this has found favour with his family, and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, that is, the Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies, Tamale.”
Former President Jerry John Rawlings used his World Food Prize money of $50,000 to establish the university[ads5]
