The Western Regional Command of National Fire Service upon a recurring incident has today, Thursday, June 11, released a public statement cautioning the general public to stay away from fire scenes and desist from the practice of siphoning and scooping fuel from tankers/bulk road vehicles involved in road accidents.

According to statement from the regional command, a total number of 189 fire related cases have been recorded starting January 2020 breeding a total death toll of 5 persons and 3 other individuals sustaining various degrees of injuries within the period.
Adding up the service reveal there have been 6 road traffic collision incidents with 1 person sustaining injuries.

About the cause of these several fire related cases, injuries and deaths the command stated that carrying out their duties; they come across several individuals who are trying to catch a glimpse of the incident or trying to scoop and siphon some items or fluid from the building or the vehicles involved.
The command added that 100m and 500m distances are expected between light commercial incidents and heavy commercial, industry premises or involving highly inflammable.
“In this regard, the recommended minimum safety distance is one hundred meters (100m) for fires at domestic and light commercial premises where the fire may be classified as medium. For fires at heavy commercial and industrial premises or involving highly inflammable fuels, the recommended minimum safety distance is five hundred meters (500m)”.

“The Western Region has recorded a total of one hundred and eighty-nine (189) fire incidents from January, 2020 to date. Out of these incidents, a total of five (5) persons have lost their lives and three (3) persons have sustained various degrees of injuries. The Region has also recorded a total of six (6) road traffic collision (RTC) incidents, with one (1) person sustaining injuries”.
“The Command therefore wishes to caution the general public to stay away from such scenes and desist from the practice of siphoning and scooping fuel from tankers/bulk road vehicles involved in road accidents. The Service in collaboration with the Ghana Police will team up to strictly enforce adherence to the recommended safety distances for incident scenes, and offenders shall be arrested and prosecuted” – Western Region Command of the Ghana National Fire Service.
