Elijeko Foundation, a Ghanaian based NGO, has expressed its readiness to render its support to the Government of Ghana to prevent the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.
In a circular issued by its Executive Director, and Physician Associate at the Suntreso Government Hospital in Kumasi, Mrs Priscilla Ama Pokuaa, the Executive Director mentioned that they were making their intentions known after the Government’s announcement and response to the disease.
“As a community based preventive health education and charity organization, we stand ready to provide the needed support and education to the general public.
“Covid-19 as any other viral infection, is spread by person to person, when they come in close contact with an infected person normally six feet,” the statement added.
Preventive measures
Mrs Pokuaa however, advised the general public to remain calm as they observe the safety guidelines issued by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
She indicated that the guidelines included the frequent washing of hands with soap and under running water, as well as the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Mrs Pokuaa said one must use proper coughing techniques, such as coughing into your elbow, handkerchief or tissue paper when in public or overcrowded places.
The statement also advised that the touching of nose, eyes and mouth must be avoided as much as possible, whilst the biting of fingernails must be discouraged.
Mrs Pokuaa further advised the citizenry to avoid close contact with sick persons, especially those with flu-like symptoms, and seek medical attention if one feels sick especially with fever, shortness of breath, and cough symptoms.
Ultimately, it also advised Ghanaians to avoid trips to highly Covid-19 infected countries, otherwise one must observe all safety guidelines that have been provided when travelling to those countries.
