The management of Sunda International – a Chinese company in Ghana have responded to agitations of residents of Bortianor ( a suburb in Accra) and its environs.
There were a reported agitations from the residents of Bortianor, and other communities in Greater Accra in the media over the recent activities of the company.
According to the reports, these residents have raised concerns of the recent activities of the company causing artificial earthquakes and tremors in the enclave where the company are working at.
But in a statement, the management of Sunda International have reacted to the agitations, stating that the company has no intentions of endangering the lives of these residents.
According to the management of the company, though they are operating under strict compliance and directives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the company has taken into consideration the concerns of the residents.[ads1]
The statement further explain that Sunda International is only levelling a portion of land acquired for the construction of the biggest detergent factory in Africa, and has no intention of endangering the lives of people living in and around the blasting site.
The Assistant Project Manager of Sunda International, Richard Awusi Adinkrah also stressed that , “the company since its entry into the enclave has maintained good relationship with the inhabitants and is focused on maintaining it. What we [Sunda] are doing is levelling the land so that we can put up a factory”
He continued that, ” And because part of the land is rocky, we have acquired license to blast and we have even employed technology such that when we blast there will not be stones flying.”
He admitted that, “the impact of the blasting cause some damage and in some instance damage to electronic gadgets mostly television sets. But before we undertake any blasting, which is usually between 4:30 to 6pm, we announce to the community to be on the lookout and once it’s done we go round the community to check damage and also people with identified cracks also report to us and we quickly attend to it. ”
He added that Sunda International, a company with the well-being of people at heart will continue to listen to the concerns of the community and address them whenever necessary.[ads4]
“We have millions of dollars in investment and we have no intention of creating an animosity between us and our host and that is why we go all out to help and as I speak most of our employees are from here [Bortianor], we have constructed inner roads, market places so you can see we have the interest of the community at heart”, he added.
Sunda International was established in 2000, and is one of the international trade enterprises. The company currently has several factories, producing ceramic tiles, diapers, nails, soap and other fast moving consumer goods and also in the real estate space employing thousands of Ghanaians.
