Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City have beaten Kumasi Asante Kotoko for the signature of Karela United skipper William Opoku Mensah.
Kotoko were in the race to sign the sensational goal poacher but lost the battle to the MSL side following the player’s willingness to travel abroad for greener pastures.
Eric Alegidede – the director of communication for the Crosby Awuah Memorial lads made this revelation during an interview with Kumasi based Ashh FM.
According to Eric, Kotoko were eager to sign the former Sekondi Eleven Wise striker to boost up their attacking force ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup group stages campaign but the deal was halted because the player had already signed a pre-contract with the US side.
“Opoku Mensah signed a pre-contract agreement with Kansas City about two weeks ago so we were waiting for the documentations from the team before the Kotoko offer came. But the player chose the MLS Club(Kansas City) over Kotoko
“William Opoku Mensa told Kotoko officials personally that he wants to move abroad because it’s every player’s dream to play abroad and Karela United can’t do anything about it because we needed to respect the players’ decision.
“We(Karela United) couldn’t finish the negotiations with Kotoko so I can’t tell you that the money Kotoko offered for the player was less for Karela, but it was the players’ decision to choose the MLS(Kansas City)club over Kotoko.
“William Opoku Mensah was valued by Karela United at a fee of (60,000 to 65,000 EUROS) because he is a very good and talented player but (€75,000) was the market value of the player due to his performance.
