Oil and Gas exploration company, Tullow Oil have on Monday, May 8, 2023 cut sod for the construction of a 12-unit boys dormitory at the Takoradi Senior High School otherwise known as Tadisco.
The project financed by Tullow Oil with Vital Creations as the constructor is expected to be completed within twelve months. Fifteen of same projects are ongoing in the country with eleven of them in the Western Region where schools like Methodist Senior High, Axim Girls Senior High School are beneficiaries.
Speaking at the sod cutting ceremony at the school premises, the Director of Education at the Effia/Kweisminstin Municipal Assembly, Mrs Catherine Biney stated that the dormitory when completed will help promote discipline at the school since most of the students lodging at hotels outside the school’s campus will be moving to the dormitory which will go a long way to enhance teaching and learning.
“I am really excited because if all the students are in the boarding house, discipline is very high which helps in grooming the kids to be better persons in the society. Some of the students are in hostels outside the campus of the school where there is no proper monitoring of their movement”, she said.
She added; “It’s like a parent with their wards in same compound, there is proper control and monitoring of movement. The dormitory will enhance teaching and learning at the school because preps among other things will be well observed, so we are grateful to Tullow Oil for the amazing gesture. We only plead for girls dormitory as well.”
She however urged the management of the school to ensure the facility is well maintained when completed to ginger Tullow Oil to help the school with more projects.
“I will plead with parents to help in maintaining the facility when completed by paying maintenance levy and others to ensure the longevity of the facility because if we maintain it very well, it will motivate Tullow Oil and other organizations to come to our aid whenever the need arises. Teachers must also educate the students on how to use the facility”, she added.
The headmistress of the school, Mrs Cynthia Ackon emphasised on the need for Takoradi Senior High School to get more dormitories to enhance teaching and learning.
She indicated that the school with a total population of 2,736, only 500 students are in the boarding house because of lack of facilities, a situation she said is affecting the academic performance of the school.
Mrs Cynthia Ackon was however grateful to Tullow Oil for the gesture and asked for girls dormitory as well.
