The Ghana Police Service’s Greater Accra Regional Command has informed the demonstration organizers that their selected site is inappropriate due to security concerns.
Organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil met with police on May 15, 2024, after notification of a demonstration against power outages, or dumsor, that was to take place on May 25, 2024.
“Because the Jubilee House, which is directly opposite the Revolution Square, is the seat of Government and therefore a security zone, the protest and picketing at the Revolution Square may endanger public defense, public order, public safety, and violate the rights and freedoms of other persons,” the police stated in a confidential notice dated May 15, 2024, to the organizers.
The statement went on to say that there was further security concern around the midnight closing hour.
Instead, the police asked that the demonstration be moved to Independence Square and promised to offer all necessary assistance in that respect.
The organizers have not yet responded to the most recent information.
